The Great Wisconsin Birdathon started in 2012 as a joint effort between the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology, and the Wisconsin Bird Conservation Initiative (WBCI). In 2013, birders and donors together raised $56,000 to support seven bird conservation projects in Wisconsin. The projects that will benefit from the 2014 Great Wisconsin Birdathon include The 2nd Wisconsin Breeding Bird Atlas, Bird City Wisconsin, Wisconsin Bird Monitoring, Kirtland's Warbler Monitoring and Management, Important Bird Areas: Southern Forests Initiative, Wisconsin Stopover Initiative, Neotropical Migrant Wintering Areas--Reforesting the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica, and Whooping Crane Reintroduction Program
With fully one-third of state residents 16 and older reporting they travel to watch birds, or actively watch and identify birds around home. Wisconsin ranks second nationally in the proportion of citizens considered birders, according to a recently released U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service report.
Wisconsin trailed only Vermont, where 39 percent of residents are birders, and tied with West Virginia, where 33 percent of their population also watches birds. Numbers-wise, however, the Badger State vastly outnumbered those two states, with Wisconsin boasting 1,678,000 birders, compared to 292,000 for the Green Mountain State and 574,000 for the Mountain State.
Wisconsin features both northern and southern breeding species and sits astride a major migration pathway, allowing birders easy access to one of the most diverse collections of bird life in the United States. More than 400 species have been recorded in the state, with the vast majority of species and numbers being migratory birds. Others, like chickadees, cardinals, grouse, and turkeys, are permanent residents , making occasional visits to our feeders through the winter.
Other birds migrate to warmer climes for the winter, returning north as the weather warms again. There are websites were citizens can report firt sightings of different species to provide data to track their movements over the years.
Purple martin migration map:
According to the Purple Martin Conservation Association's scout arrival study for 2014, a purple martin was spotted here in Sherwood a few days ago on April 10th.
So I guess we should figure out how to get our purple martin house erected-unfortunately the pole we purchased does not seem to allow installation of the purple marting bridhouse we purchased a few years ago (despite the fact we purchased the both at the same time at Mills Fleet Farm).
The keen interest in birding in Wisconsin can be seen in the growing number of communities seeking "Bird City Wisconsin" www.birdcitywisconsin.org (exit DNR) status indicating their commitment to bird conservation efforts. Since the program started in 2010, 76 communities have been designated Bird Cities.
The Village of Sherwood, named a "Bird City" in 2012, is well positioned to host birding efforts due to the location of the 1,200-acre High Cliff State Park in Sherwood on the shores of Lake Winnebago. The village has two golf courses within its boundaries, providing for ample green space and a wide variety of flora and fauna. High Cliff, the largest state-owned recreation land on Lake Winnebago, has a very active Purple Martin colony with 54 holes available near the marina on this 1,187-acre property.
Using the cliffs in the park as their home base, the several dozen Wild Turkeys now roost in the area and are daily visitors to local backyards.
And local bird enthusiasts have for numerous years helped nurture a growing population of Eastern Bluebirds. To further this claim Sherwood is currently a member of the Bluebird Restoration Association of Wisconsin and has provided recent data of monitoring and surveys done in the community.
Through its quarterly Newsletter, the Village reaches out to its 2,700 residents to discuss acceptable feeding practices for birds. Other types of bird-related information also will be published in this manner, including increased birding opportunities, and how to maintain a safe and healthy bird population in our semi-urban environment. In accordance with ordinance NO: 99-67 the village of Sherwood has created a Park and Recreation Commission that is pursuant to Wisconsin State Statute section 27.08. This commission aids in the maintenance and removal of current forest stands and local hindrances to birds.
Sherwood has approved resolution that proclaims May 1, 2014 to be International Migratory Bird Day where residents are encouraged to celebrate and partake in bird related activities provided in the village.
